My #19in2019 : A Gretchen Rubin Challenge
As I wrote about in this blog post over on my old Tomes and Tequila blog, I’ve been a big fan of Gretchen Rubin for quite some time. I’ve read all of her books, and have been a long time listener of her Happier with Gretchen Rubin podcast. She has a new book coming out later this year I’m really excited for, Outer Order, Inner Calm…a phrase and subject she’s talked about in her other books (and one I’ve repeated ad nauseum to my kids!). But what I’d like to talk about today is her idea of making a 19 in 2019 list.
Part resolutions and goals, part bucket list, Gretchen and her sister Elizabeth Craft shared their ideas on Episode 203 of the Happier Podcast. Gretchen had things like getting to inbox 0 (even if just for a moment), walking faster, and taking her daughter to Vegas on her list. Her sister Elizabeth made a 9 for 2019 list after being too ambitious in 2018, and had things like making the perfect guacamole, getting Fraxel and holding a Happier in Hollywood retreat. See…part bucket list, part goals/resolutions. Gretchen was sure to say not to put something like “Learn Spanish” or “Get Healthy” on your list, but instead to break it into something like Attend Yoga Class X number of times or Download DuoLingo App to your phone and practice Spanish for 5 minutes a day. These shouldn’t be abstract things, although her walk faster thing made me laugh. If you listen to her discuss it, she talks about how she’d got in the habit of strolling, and wanted to start walking with purpose!
She is also adamant that this is YOUR list to do with as you please. If you want the entire thing to be full of easy, breezy fun stuff…then that’s how you make it. If you want it to be harder and more aspirational…then that’s what your list should look like. This isn’t supposed to be a project that fills you with stress or dread. It’s completely up to you!
Anyway, I thought it would be fun to make myself a 19 in 2019 list, and share it with y’all as both a means of accountability, and to perhaps spur you on to create lists for yourself. Like I said, you could really just make it a bucket list full of fun things if you wanted to…I see no problem with that! I decided to make mine a mix of the two. I am also reading Erin Falconer’s book How to Get Sh*t Done, and have been doing some work to pick 3 big goals I’m striving to accomplish, so I tried to make some of mine lean towards helping with those goals. I’m mixing my gurus and self-helps!
So, here’s my 19 in 2019 list:
Run a mile.
Finish scanning photos and mementos into the computer.
Weekend getaway with the hubby.
Run a 5k
Complete my Goodreads Challenge
Finish my children’s book and query agents
30 day blue dot streak on WW app
Spa/Girl day with my daughter
Buy the perfect black work bag
Konmari the upstairs of my house
Attend 2 concerts/live music shows
At least 2 blog posts a week.
Pay off one credit card
Write one card/letter a month
Learn 5 songs on the guitar
Get shoulder tattoo
3 date nights a month with the hubby
Watch 5 movies in the theater with my son
Plant a garden
At first glance these might seem silly or like a throw-away list, but believe it or not, I spent quite some time pondering what should make my 19 list! If you decide to make one yourself, I’d love to hear what items you’ve decided to spend your energy on in 2019.
